Mathematics
Intent
Why do we teach maths? Why do we teach it the way we do?
At Wainscott Primary School, we want every pupil to experience the power, beauty, and enjoyment of mathematics. We aim to foster curiosity and a deep understanding of core mathematical concepts. We believe that all children can succeed in maths, so our teaching focuses on building secure and deep conceptual understanding through carefully planned, manageable steps.
Mistakes and misconceptions are embraced as essential parts of the learning process, helping pupils refine their thinking. We challenge learners with rich, sophisticated problems that encourage creativity, resilience, and the application of knowledge in diverse contexts. Our goal is for pupils to become confident experts who can apply maths fluently and creatively.
We aim for all pupils to:
· Become fluent in fundamental mathematical skills, with rapid and accurate recall and application of knowledge.
· Solve problems across a range of contexts, including unfamiliar and real-life scenarios, developing increasing sophistication.
· Reason mathematically, constructing and communicating logical arguments, justifications, and proofs using precise mathematical language.
We follow Pearson's Power Maths scheme.
NumBots
NumBots is all about every child achieving the “triple win” of understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction, so that they move from counting to calculating. This website or app allows children to work on subitising* and number-bonds which will help them to build up their number fluency.
*Subitising means the ability to look at a small set of objects and instantly know how many there are without counting them. For example when you roll a dice, you don’t need to count the dots to know what you have rolled.
Times Tables Rock Stars
Times Tables Rock Stars is a maths programme (available online or on app) that takes all the worry out of learning times tables and has a proven track record of boosting children’s fluency and recall in multiplication and division. TTRS also records the speed of each attempt. It works initially by testing the children to see what multiplications facts they already know, which then allows the app to measure the children's ability and challenge them accordingly. This means that the children will get the tables at their ability level. Children are able to Children can earn points which they can spend on changing their avatar and buying different accessories for them. They can also challenge each other as well as join in all Primary First Trust battles.
